One Third: Challenges and Lessons in Phius High-Rise Design and Verification

Description
High-rise buildings pursuing Phius certification face unique challenges in achieving energy efficiency, occupant comfort, and sustainability at scale. This session explores the technical details of One Third a 63-story tower in Brooklyn pursuing Phius Zero that is part of a passive house city block. Through This case study will introduce the project’s design and goals, dive into the technical intricacies of the envelope and mechanical systems, and address challenges and innovative solutions from a Phius design and verification perspective.

Speakers:
Prudence Ferreira has 20 years of sustainability consulting experience on large-scale residential, commercial, institutional and manufacturing projects. She is experienced with sustainability program and policy development, building and campus level energy modeling and decarbonization master planning. Areas of special expertise include building science and passive house. She is a long-standing member of the Phius Technical Committee and Board of Directors, and has been teaching energy modeling, hygrothermal analysis and the Certified Passive House Consultant (CPHC) training in North America since 2011. She has consulted on more than five-million square feet of passive house projects across seven different climate zones and has experience with unique passive house typologies such as curtain wall tower, historic masonry retrofit, medical facilities, labs and schools.
Jen Grosso is the Director of Architecture at Alloy Development, an integrated real estate development company based in Brooklyn. At Alloy she oversees the design and architecture team for their large scale mixed-use projects. Jen is the Vice President of the Phius Board of Directors and a trustee to the Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation.
